ALPHABETISATION

(LITERACY PROGRAMME FOR ADULT)

Literacy rate amongst our people is relatively low at approximately 23%. We have therefore included them in the government literacy programme for 2018. We received the news yesterday 28th Dec 17 that our inclusion has been approved and confirmed. Earlier this year we have tried to engage a facilitator. Hopefully he is still available. We have contacted him last night. He will discuss his release with his leaders and will confirm on Monday. The facilitators' workshop will start on the 04th January 2018 for 14 days. After which we will establish a literacy center in the Loropeni area for the Loropeni, Logonso, and Dougoufinissa sector of the Loropeni commune.

Our next objective is to get one of our people to be trained as a facilitator. This will help a lot because we do not have a qualified person in the commune, that’s why we’re looking outside for an available facilitator. If we can get one of our people to attend the facilitator course and be certified, it will certainly do a lot of good. This programme works well with us because of our low literacy rate limits the approach for community evangelism and discipleship. We desire to give them the Bible, Bible study materials, written materials and songs, but we’re not able to do so for the time being. If we can teach our people to read and write, that will certainly broaden our frontier of approach.

We are hoping to include French language learning and this is part of our empowerment programme. Having a basic knowledge of French as an official language will help but this will come at our own cost; unlike the Fulfulde language learning which is sponsored by the government. Hopefully we can fit this into the scheduled days so participants can do both on a designated day rather than having separate sessions and days.
